Everything You Need To Know About Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection that occurs in the tissues surrounding and supporting your teeth. In adults, this is a significant cause of tooth loss. It is because you may not even know you have gum disease as it is painless. Gum disease is also known as periodontal disease and is caused by the sticky bacteria-laden film called plaque that builds up around the teeth.

What are the signs and symptoms of gum disease?

The warning signs and symptoms of gum disease are, as follows:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Red, swollen and tender gums
  • Sore gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Teeth get sensitive to hot or cold
  • Pain in the mouth while chewing
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Bad taste in the mouth
  • Loose or separating permanent teeth
  • Change in your bite
  • Change in the fit of partial dentures

What are the factors that cause gum disease?

Several factors can increase the risk of developing gum disease; they include:

  • Improper oral hygiene
  • Smoking or chewing tobacco
  • Lack of nutrition
  • Missing regular dental checkups
  • Genetics
  • Hard to clean crooked teeth
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Changes in hormones especially in women
  • Diabetes
  • Medications, such as steroids, cancer therapy drugs, certain types of anti-epilepsy drugs, oral contraceptives and some calcium channel blockers

What are the stages of gum disease?

Gum disease usually has two stages:

Gingivitis:This is the primary stage of gum disease, in which the gums get swollen and red, bleeding easily. At this stage, it is quite easy to treat, and you can even get rid of it by daily brushing and flossing, also through the medications that the dentist prescribes.

Periodontitis: If you do not get gingivitis treated at its early stage, then it might develop to periodontitis. The gums and bone supporting the teeth get irreversibly and severely damaged. When the gums get infected and become too severe, then there might be teeth loss, fall out, or tooth extraction.

What are the common treatments provided for gum disease?

Periodontists are specialized dentists who are skilled to prevent, diagnose, and treat gum disease. The commonly used treatment for the condition is, as follows:

  • Gum lift/Gum Contouring is a treatment through which you can reshape the volume of the gum.
  • Periodontal plastic surgery can let the teeth look significantly longer or more pronounced.
  • Periodontal flap surgery treats and repairs the periodontal pockets.

How can you prevent gum disease?

There are some ways to prevent gum disease, such as:

  • Quit smoking
  • Reducing stress to improve the body’s immune system
  • Maintain a good diet
  • Avoid clenching and grinding of teeth
